For the Toddlers

Investing in the little ones ensures that children in our community have access to high-quality early education.

We will make sure that:
bullwet Language-rich home environments. The achievement gap is evident well before children enter school. Home visiting and family education programs that stress early language and emerging literacy skills are critical to children’s school readiness.
bullet High-quality infant/toddler supports. The first three years of life are a crucial time for acquiring language and building vocabulary. High-quality early education and care programs (e.g., center-based, family child care, Early Head Start, etc.) that expose infants and toddlers to language-rich activities have been linked to higher academic achievement in later years.
bullet
High-quality pre-kindergarten. Pre-kindergarten is an early childhood intervention that, according to decades of research, leads to better educational, health, economic and life outcomes.
bullet High-quality full-day kindergarten. Children attending full-day kindergarten programs exhibit greater gains in reading, math and science achievement and lower rates of grade retention than children in half-day programs.
bullet PK-3 systems alignment and support. Elementary education requires a comprehensive set of strategies from pre-kindergarten through third grade in order to maximize early learning success. Effective PK-3 alignment creates linkages around curriculum, instruction, assessment and professional development.
bullet High-quality instruction and professional development. Research emphasizes the critical role of teacher quality in both K-12 and early education settings. It is the most important school-based determinant of student achievement. Likewise, the education, training and compensation of early educators are the main determinants of program quality, which has a direct impact on children’s learning and healthy development.

Investing in our Children

Shapla Primary School is a lovely school. On my first visit to the school, I was met very warmly at the entrance by the acting head teacher, who took me along to the ICT suite, where I waited on the children who had very kindly given up some of their time to meet with me.

II introduced myself to the children and explained why I was there. I asked them what they could tell me about their school, what they think about being part of it, asking them to tell me how they feel they are listened to by the staff within the school and what changes they feel  they have made over the past year. when I asked them about any improvements and change they wanted this is what they said:

More games and after school clubs

The children told me that they weren’t happy with the choice of game that they had available or during their break times, so they asked the teachers if they could have some new ones.

New laptops and net-books

The children told me that they had asked for new laptops for the school as their old ones weren’t very good and they needed more up-to-date programmes on them. They now have new laptops for their school council and the other classes now have new net-books.

Healthy school meals

The children told me that they now have school meals that they like and prefer to eat. They explained to me that most of the children in school, if not all, have free school dinners and so it is important to them that they have nice thing that they like on the menu.

They said that they spoke with one of the school cooks, who asked what type of foods they liked and wanted to see on the menu. They were very keen to tell me that their menu is now nice AND healthy at the same time. For example, they now have things like chicken curry and strawberry milkshake (that is made with fresh strawberries) and they still like to have salad with everything. They also said that they are only allowed a little bit of chocolate in school.

Investing in the ARTS

We have a strong history of giving back to our young community and our neighbourhood. We believe that investing in dance and the arts is essential to a vibrant and thriving community.
Students participating in dance and drama
Participating in cultural activities as children and young people has countless benefits, but is also the best predictor for cultural participation later in life. It will help guid to develop their skills as creative residents and help in thier confidence.

Tower Hamlets is BEAUTIFUL

Yesterday along with some local residents we decided to see the beautiful greenery of tower hamlets.

We climbed trees and overlooked the parks and children playing centres. To say it was breathtaking is an understatement. I have decided to invest more money on the outside green space of our community to make it even more stunning, safe and green. A greener tower halets makes a more beautiful tower hamlets :)
